Woman Charged with Fifth DUI
It is being reported that Rebecca Vela, who had previously been convicted four times of driving under the influence, did not learn from her previous ways. On the night of April 18, she was driving at a speed over 70 mph when she struck the motorcycle that 54-year-old Stanley Spaeth Jr. was riding on his way home from his second job.
After the initial collision, she then fled, driving into a sound wall with the motorcycle still jammed underneath her car.
Due to the violent disregard for the law and the damage dealt to the victim, prosecutors chose to pursue a second-degree murder conviction instead of the typical vehicular manslaughter. They were rewarded when they won a fifteen-years-to-life prison sentence.
