LAPD Sergeant Arrested January 13 for Alleged Fraud

On Friday, January 13, a sergeant of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was arrested based on allegations of fraud. The 24-year veteran of the police force was booked after suspicion arose based on what police reports deemed "inconsistent doctors' notes." The defendant had been injured and been off work due to a workers' compensation claim from May 13, 2010 to March 27, 2011.

Police reports state that the defendant had altered doctors' notes in an attempt to elongate his time off work and to continue receiving compensation past the point where it was owed. He has since been booked on the suspicion of felony charges that involve not only workers' compensation fraud, but also two counts of felony insurance fraud and one count of misdemeanor insurance fraud.

He has surrendered after an arrest warrant was issued and has since been released on $30,000 bail. If he is successfully convicted of these crimes, the defendant will find himself facing criminal charges that include up to seven years of imprisonment, as well as a monetary fine that could top out at $150,000.
