Former Police Detective Pleads In Child Pornography Case

Okabe & Haushalter May 24, 2019 Child Pornography

Sex crimes against minors are taken seriously in Los Angeles. Anyone who finds themselves facing child pornography charges is starting at a severe disadvantage due to the tactics used by prosecutors and law enforcement. Today, we want to discuss these cases and highlight a recent plea made by a former LAPD detective.

At Okabe & Haushalter, we have a long track record of successfully defending those who need a Los Angeles child pornography defense attorney. Let us get to work immediately so we can help you get through this.

What Can Happen?

In April of 2019, we learned that a former LAPD detective was being investigated for possession of child pornography. This case is interesting because this was not the initial focus of the investigation into Clark Baker.

Initially, police executed a search warrant at a resident associated with Baker in an unrelated bankruptcy investigation. Part of this investigation involved a forensic examination of his digital devices. During the course of the investigation, police allegedly discovered child pornography on two digital devices owned by Baker.

In May, Baker pleaded no contest and is awaiting sentencing. He could face up to three years in prison.

We have also learned that a local nanny is facing four counts of felony child molestation as well as possession of child pornography. He stands accused of inappropriately touching young boys he worked with. Police allegedly found child pornography during the course of their ongoing investigation.

The Penalties Are Severe

These cases are seen differently by the public and prosecutors take advantage of that. Innocent until proven guilty often does not seem to apply to those accused of possessing child pornography. Their mugshot is plastered all over the news and internet with a list of the crimes they allegedly committed. Unlike other crimes, the public usually comes to the conclusion of guilt before a person has had their first court appearance.

How is this fair?

How is this okay in our justice system?

The penalties for being found guilty of possessing child pornography are severe and can include:

In many cases, a person can face BOTH state and federal charges for the same material as well as separate charges for each individual video or image found.
