What Caused 10 Kids at San Francisco School to Fall Ill?

Okabe & Haushalter Feb 22, 2018 Criminal Defense

James Lick Middle School in San Francisco was the scene of a mystery illness on February 13, as ten children exhibited symptoms including vomiting, altered levels of consciousness, and a variety of moderate effects.

It is currently believed that the children in question had ingested an unknown substance, and each is being treated for the adverse symptoms. Although the children, aged between 12 and 15, told school staff and police what they believed they had taken, the substance has not been confirmed.

Emergency crews attended the middle school shortly after 1 pm, after receiving a 911 call from concerned school staff.

Parents with children attending James Lick Middle School have been asked to inform police if their children display any unusual behavior, or admit to taking even a small amount of the mystery substance.

Drug Possession in San Francisco

While the substance involved in the sickening of the children at James Lick Middle School has not been identified, and there’s been no official suggestion of illegal drugs being involved, if it is found that the students became ill after taking drugs, the person responsible for supplying can expect to face serious charges.

San Francisco drug-related crimes can carry a range of sentences, depending on the specifics of the case, and any previous convictions. For example, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana can be punishable with a $100 fine, while any amount of cocaine will be considered a felony, involving up to 5 years’ imprisonment.

Representation by an experienced San Francisco criminal defense attorney could have considerable benefits for you, not least of which is the comfort you can take from knowing you’re not facing drug charges alone.

Sale or Distribution of Drugs

Drug possession is a serious crime in itself, but selling or distributing drugs is on a whole other level. Even if the drug in question is a prescription medication, you could face criminal charges.

As you may expect, any intention to supply drugs to minors is treated even more seriously and carries enhanced penalties. The charges which fall into this category include:

  • Selling or distributing drugs to a minor
  • Selling or distributing drugs on a school campus, or near a school
  • Involving minors in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs
