Fight Back Against Embezzlement Charges

Okabe & Haushalter Dec 18, 2020 White Collar Crimes

In the 90s, I remember a hilarious movie that seemed to capture the essence of feeling unfulfilled in your career and turned mundane tasks into comedy gold. “Office Space” has become a cult classic and has no shortage of memorable one-liners.  Even the infamous Bill Lumbergh has become a popular meme, “Yeah… That’d be great.” After the threat of downsizing may cost them their jobs, our protagonists launch a revenge embezzlement scheme.  I remember cheering for them when they smashed the faulty copier, the fire in the building, and clapped when Milton finally got a suntan.

However, what this cult classic captured was a revenge fantasy.  In real life, the charge of embezzlement is jarring.  If you have been charged with embezzlement, you could face a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the value of the assets in question.

The Los Angeles, California embezzlement criminal defense attorneys at Okabe & Haushalter, have extensive experience handling these charges.  If you or someone you know has been accused of embezzlement, they could be facing a significant prison sentence as well as other penalties.  When you need a criminal defense attorney, contact the law offices of Okabe & Haushalter today.

Employee Charged with Multiple Counts of Embezzlement

Luis Edwin Perez is accused of a $180,000 embezzlement scheme against a local construction company.  Perez has been employed with Peterson Brotherson Construction Inc. since 2015.  The construction company alleges that Perez was using fake duplicate invoices for personal purchases.  An accountant spotted the inconsistencies, and Perez was confronted.  Police have stated that Perez has resigned from his post and later sent an apology email admitting his actions.  Perez has pleaded not guilty, and a pre-trial hearing is set for December 28th.

According to CBS News, Perez faces sentencing enhancement claims of aggravated white-collar crimes between $100,000 and $500,000 due to the dozen felony counts of embezzlement.

Why You Should Fight Back

If you have been accused of a white-collar crime or are facing grand theft or embezzlement charges, contact us at Okabe & Haushalter immediately.  Our knowledgeable attorneys have successfully defended against these charges.  We have used several strategies to include:

  • Showing there is no responsibility of one party to care for another party’s assets, i.e., fiduciary duty.
  • Showing you did not steal the funds.
  • Showing you used the funds legitimately for the business.
  • Proving there isn’t enough evidence to support the claim of embezzlement
  • Or proving you were under duress.  Duress could mean that you thought someone would harm you or someone you loved if the funds were not appropriated.
